Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 20th of December.
Good morning, Chicago.
🎭 Culture
South Side Weekly’s 2025 Music Roundup highlighted local artists like Mykele Deville and Monte Booker, with sold-out live shows in Pilsen and the South Loop — events that showcased Chicago’s vibrant indie music culture.
🎓 Education
UIC researchers used the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to image a lanthanum and yttrium superhydride, revealing how its crystal structure affects superconducting behavior and may lower operating pressures for near-room-temperature performance.
The study appears in Nature Communications and paves the way for advances in energy storage.
🏥 Health
Engineers at UIC built a battery-free sensor that sticks to the skin like a sticker to check temperature and sweat markers such as sugar and salt.
The team is testing the sensor during exercise + meals and will add tests for more sweat markers soon.
UIC Nursing is the only program in Illinois to earn the Healthcare Simulation Standards Endorsement from the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning.
The three-year award shows that the Schwartz Simulation Lab on the Chicago campus uses best practices in simulation exercises (designed to boost student learning).
