Good morning, Chicago. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 3rd of December.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC theatre senior Omar Fernandez has earned praise for his playwriting and for founding Subtext Studio to give UIC students and graduates real work in Chicago theatre—his semi-autobiographical play 'Que Te Vaya Bien' received strong reviews and helped shape diverse voices. He is set to graduate in December as he leaves a legacy of kindness and community support in the theatre department.  Today UIC
  • Dr. D. Allan Drummond—an associate professor at the University of Chicago and longtime Hyde Park resident—studies how yeast cells react to heat and acid to understand nature’s natural cues, possibly linking temperature changes to birds visiting grapevines. He works in his lab to test how such shifts in the environment help cells adapt and spread, opening a new view on age-old biological processes.  Hyde Park Herald
  • UIC announced that effective Dec. 1 students enrolled in SNAP were required to supply extra information to keep receiving benefits—students had to be enrolled more than half-time and meet exemptions such as working 20 hours a week or caring for children. Officials said that those with meal plans might see their eligibility affected if most meals are provided through the plan, so students should check with their local SNAP office for details.  Today UIC
