- ➤ Amateur bakers can register for the South Side Pie Challenge through Oct. 26 to compete in fruit, nut, cream and sweet potato or pumpkin pie categories at Ray Elementary School on Nov. 1. Neighbors can enjoy a pie tasting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and funds raised will benefit the Hyde Park-Kenwood Food Pantry — a service for about 350 people weekly — as community members support each other during challenging times. - ➤ Chicago’s oldest community newspaper, The Hyde Park Herald, is recruiting freelance reporters for its paid contributor network to cover community news, housing, and development in Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Woodlawn — early-career writers are encouraged to submit brief introductions and story ideas. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Mohammed “Mo” Cookbey has been named head coach of Kenwood Academy’s boys basketball team this fall after Joe Mason left following a championship season. Cookbey brings AAU championship experience — he also teaches special education — and will focus on developing player skills and academics as the team adjusts to roster changes. Hyde Park Herald
