CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Local artist Chris Devins painted a new mural on the old church on Blackstone Ave in Hyde Park using wheat paste two weeks ago—his work copies a famous Renaissance painting and is part of his 'Churches' series. He said he will add more murals to other closed churches around the city. Hyde Park Herald
- ➤ Louise McCurry co-organized a used book sale at Kimbark Plaza that drew long lines of book lovers and visitors from New Jersey—many boxes of donated books drove a lively event; local shoppers picked up mystery novels and cookbooks priced from 50 cents to $3 while helping recycle books for community use. - ➤ UIC said no Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been confirmed on campus despite increased external law enforcement presence, and students, faculty and staff are told to carry their ID and call UIC Police at 312-996-2830 if they see outside officers — safety guidelines and campus support services are available for anyone feeling unsafe. - ➤ The UIC Senate will hold two town halls on Friday, Oct. 17 to gather feedback for the search profile for the next provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs — one in person at the Cardinal Room from 1-2 p.m. and one on Zoom from 4-5 p.m. Today UIC
- ➤ The UIC Department of Public Policy, Management and Analytics is hosting a virtual master’s degree information session in public policy, public administration (NASPAA-accredited) and civic analytics; the session will review degree requirements, course options and alumni career paths, and interested students may RSVP for a Zoom link. - ➤ UIC graduate student Clay Mizgerd has won the inaugural Simons Dissertation Fellowship from the Simons Foundation—joining 39 other math students nationwide and one of only two winners from Illinois. He will receive a $30,000 stipend and an additional $2,000 for university funding over two years and plans to use the support for academic travel. Today UIC
