  • The Urban Comuniversity Center on 91st and Jeffery has offered Zumba, stepping, and after-school programs since 2016 to serve local students in Calumet Heights—providing support through a youth employment program funded by a state grant.   • Thrift LLC, a Black-owned boutique near Chicago Lawn and Gage Park, offers residents affordable fashion finds including graphic tees and silk pieces — a direct nod to local style.   • Across Western Avenue from McKinley Park, Café Consume and Consume Vintage serve coffee and secondhand goods in a family-run shop led by brothers Andrés and Guillermo and their mother Olga.   • At In the Clouds Tattoo on the South Side, a customer on Friday the 13th found a welcoming studio run by Latine sisters Mila and Luna Alvarado that blends art, flash sales, and community care — the shop also hosts block parties and fundraisers to bring locals together.   • UIC has updated its Box environment to include Box AI—a free, opt-in tool that can search, summarize and extract key information from documents—along with Box Hubs and Box Sign now available for all UIC Box account holders. These updates aim to improve file organization and collaboration while maintaining current access controls.  Today UIC
  • Today, the UIC Institute for Functional and Regenerative Materials hosts a speed networking event from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm where UIC faculty researching functional and regenerative materials will meet in structured rotations to share resources and ideas. Registered attendees will have one month to work on a white paper for a chance to win up to $10,000 seed funding — a list of participants and lunch details will be shared after the event — making it a key opportunity for collaborative research.  Today UIC

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 100 unionized UChicago Medicine residents and supporters rallied outside the hospital on Thursday to demand their first contract after stalled talks and low pay were cited as problems.
