EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC is transitioning from Blackboard to Canvas as early adopters began developing courses in August for spring while faculty prepared for the change. Faculty will log in starting Sept. 30 and selected colleges will officially transition on Oct. 1—Learning Technology Solutions will assist with the switch.  Today UIC
  • UIC was named a national leader in social mobility in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings after tying for 9th among public universities and ranking as the top Illinois school. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UIC is taking steps to reach its zero-waste goal by 2050 by adding recycling bins across classrooms, dining halls, and outdoor spaces as well as hosting events for recycling electronics and office supplies. The university urges everyone to sort and dispose of waste properly using designated recycling and composting drop-offs—each effort cuts waste from landfills.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Dick Durbin said he hopes to meet with ICE officials later this week about Chicago raids—he seeks answers on agent tactics and the locations of detainees.  Hyde Park Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at UIC discovered that the common gut yeast candida makes salmonella infection worse by raising arginine levels in the body. In mice, candida and salmonella clumped together led to more bacteria in the gut, liver and spleen — a sign that doctors may need to adjust treatment for those at higher risk.  Today UIC
  • Professor David Carley from UIC explained his team has identified new neurochemical pathways in sleep apnea that may lead to drug treatments—this research may expand options for patients who struggle with CPAP devices.  Today UIC
