Good morning, Chicago. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 29th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Abraham N. Katz—37 from Deer Park—was charged with reckless homicide after his car hit Lois J. Larsen’s vehicle at the South Barrington and Dundee roads intersection on March 30 when she was turning left, killing the 89-year-old Palatine woman who died on May 24.  Daily Herald
  • Records from 2024 show that 169 Chicago police officers with CIT training used force during mental health calls, even though 5,870 officers completed the training by February — experts say this use of force reveals lasting issues in safely handling crises.  South Side Weekly
  • On a January night in Little Village, Chicago, police answered a 911 call from Timothy Glaze’s girlfriend and within 18 seconds two officers fired 20 shots—while Glaze, in a mental health crisis and holding a knife, faced them—killing him.  South Side Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chicago’s CARE program—sending clinicians instead of police to mental health crises—faces a funding gap as its federal ARPA funds will expire next year and city officials must find millions to maintain and expand the service. Leaders are considering state funds and budget reallocations to keep CARE running in more neighborhoods.  South Side Weekly
  • Two national gun rights groups petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Cook County’s ban on assault-style weapons—hoping to reverse past appellate decisions and affect similar bans at local and state levels.  Daily Herald
  • Chicago city officials replaced fire department paramedics with EMTs on CARE teams— a move meant to keep enough staff for mental health emergencies that union members say lowers care quality; union leader Pat Cleary said the union will push for more paramedics if the program continues.  South Side Weekly
