  • Former Nation Pizza COO Mike Alagna from Hoffman Estates died Saturday at 80, and his family, friends, and business peers remembered him for showing young people that success could come from hard work outside of academia—his work helped build local programs like Harper College’s Advanced Manufacturing initiative and the Harper Promise scholarship. Visitation is today at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services in Schaumburg and a Mass is scheduled for Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Community in Inverness.  Daily Herald

  • The Chicago Police Department warned Woodlawn residents that armed robbers used online marketplaces to lure sellers as investigations continue into robberies on July 27 along East 63rd Street and August 15 along South Evans Avenue—urging people to stay alert.  Hyde Park Herald

  • Hyde Park is preparing for a busy fall season with events like the Chicago Underground Film Festival starting September 17 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, the Fall Garden Fair and Open Produce Block Party on September 20, and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and Children’s Book Fair on September 27 and 28.   • On August 21, more than 3,600 UIC students moved into 10 residence halls and brought mementos from home—like photos and blankets—to remind them of their roots.
