CULTURE NEWS

  • The African Festival of the Arts will return to Washington Park this Labor Day weekend—Aug. 30 through Sept. 1—after a yearlong hiatus and financial troubles nearly shuttered the event. Organizers have scaled down the 35th edition by reducing the budget and schedule while keeping art villages, music, food and local vendor participation to revive this cherished cultural celebration.  Hyde Park Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC will host Flames After Dark as its annual back-to-school bash that pits aliens against cowboys in a building takeover loaded with interactive experiences, music, food and fun—attendees can explore a laser tag arena, rave room and arcade lounge to kick off the school year.  Today UIC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Tenants at the troubled Hyde Park apartment building at 5220 S. Kenwood Ave. rallied on August 11th to demand repairs for mold, rodent, and elevator issues that have long affected residents. City records show the six-story building failed three inspections and tenants said they will withhold rent next month if the problems remain unresolved.  Hyde Park Herald
