  • Geneva resident Elaine Haughan, who lost her son James on June 4th, 2021, is working to install a wind phone in a quiet park or preserve so grieving people can speak with lost loved ones—she has reached out to local officials for support.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Carpentersville police arrested two suspects for a Wednesday night shooting that injured three people—authorities executed a search warrant at a home on Pawnee Road and charged 21-year-old Rafael Ruiz Jr. from Aurora and a 17-year-old boy with several felonies including attempted murder.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • FAN EXPO Chicago 2025 drew comic and pop culture fans at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center after a busy Saturday with celebrity guests, cosplay, and gaming displays. The event continues today from 10 a.m. — 5 p.m.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Illinois Chicago School of Law will host the two-day RAISE event from Aug. 20 at 8 a.m.—with sessions on Aug. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.—to help continuing undergrad students learn how to prepare for, apply to, and finance law school while giving priority to first-generation students and those nearing graduation. All majors are invited to explore the many law school possibilities at this immersive experience.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials and lawmakers are warning that federal cuts have laid off over 1,000 workers from the National Weather Service and NOAA—cutting the team that issues local emergency alerts after a record tornado year. Representative Sorensen is pushing the Weather Workforce Improvement Act to restore staffing and protect public safety as hurricane season approaches.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Park Ridge volunteer Paul Sheehan, a 75-year-old heart patient, rang a silver fireman’s bell at Advocate Lutheran after finishing his cardiac rehab program—he had his blocked artery opened with a balloon and stent. His bell ring celebrated his recovery as his care team and fellow patients cheered his progress.  Daily Herald
