  • Migrants who built and used The Orphanage in Bridgeport as a safe home were forced to leave after new owners delivered eviction papers in January—organizers held a final festival to honor the space while the community now faces an uncertain future for shelter.  South Side Weekly

  • First Aid Comics is a local comic book shop that started in 2009 and now sits on E. 55th St.—owner James Nurss has adapted the business to challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic by using new distributors and offering community events such as a book club and game nights. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Information Technology will host an online training session on making PDF tables and forms accessible—Christy Blew will guide content creators and accessibility specialists in using proper tagging and structure to fix common issues.  Today UIC
  • This summer, 30 community college students attended UIC’s Nanofabrication Core Facility for a Semiconductor Fabrication Training Program — they gained hands-on skills in making semiconductor devices as part of the Illinois Semiconductor Workforce Network’s efforts to grow a skilled workforce.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A clause in the Cook County Sheriff’s contract lets a system share sensitive immigrant data with LexisNexis—used by ICE—raising fears among local groups. Advocates say the county must change the contract before it ends later this year to better protect resident information.  South Side Weekly
