- ➤ On the second floor of a South Side institution, a volunteer-run legal clinic led by attorney Maureen Graves has processed over 400 asylum applications since January to help migrants face deportation risks and new work permit fees. The clinic is now dealing with fewer volunteers and rising costs (including a new $100 fee and an extra $550 for permits) as it works to support families in need. Hyde Park Herald
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An investigation by Injustice Watch revealed that UIC’s forensic lab used flawed methods in testing urine for THC—errors that led to wrongful DUI convictions in over 2,200 cases and left hundreds of defendants affected while officials maintained the lab met scientific standards. The case has raised concerns over oversight and quality control in forensic testing across many county cases. South Side Weekly
- ➤ A 34-year-old man was fatally shot last week in a Woodlawn alley near the 6600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue at 5:21 a.m.—police said an unknown offender fired several shots and no one is in custody. Hyde Park Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Elk Grove Village assigned a second police officer to work at District 59 schools, including spending up to five hours a week at two Des Plaines schools due to staffing issues— the officer will start at Friendship Junior High and Brentwood and Devonshire elementary schools at the beginning of the second semester with costs split equally between the village and the school district. - ➤ Schaumburg Community Engagement Officer Emily Zuhr was named the Illinois American Legion Police Officer of the Year and will be honored at the national convention later this month. She received the award for her work in starting the department's Quality of Life Division and engaging with local residents to build trust. Daily Herald
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The National Ability Basketball League was founded by Nick LaVere in 2023 to let athletes with intellectual disabilities play basketball year round and is finishing its 10-week summer program at Carol Stream Park District’s Fountain View Recreation Center with final camps on August 21 and 28. The nonprofit will host a Community Spotlight by the Kane County Cougars on August 27 and plans to expand its offerings with more training sessions and team opportunities—providing players with ongoing chances to improve their game.
