CRIME NEWS

  • A federal grand jury indicted Florida boat captain Daniel Gavin Couch for seaman's manslaughter in the 2022 parasailing death of Supraja Alaparthi from Elk Grove Village—her parasail struck a bridge during high winds and injured two children.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 300 people gathered at Jackson Park on August 6 to participate in the centuries-old Toro Nagashi ceremony as lanterns inscribed with names of the dead drifted on the koi pond near Yoko Ono’s Sky Landing installation—marking the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima's bombing. Speakers called for peace and transformation of past suffering as the event concluded Obon season.  Hyde Park Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chicago Public Schools teacher Anna Fimmel participated in the UIC Biomedical Engineering Experience for Science Teachers program this summer—she learned new lab techniques to design hands-on science lessons for her high school classes. The six-week program, funded by NIH grants, has helped 72 teachers from 43 schools develop innovative curricula.  Today UIC
  • Teachers in Naperville Unit District 203 voted to authorize a strike on the eve of the new school year but said they do not plan a walkout as classes resume tomorrow—union President Ross Berkley emphasized that staying in classrooms is preferred while the bargaining team now holds strike authority. The district and union are taking steps to ensure that if a strike occurs, parents and students are given proper notice.  Daily Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • XS Tennis and Education Foundation received a permit on July 31 to build a six-unit, three-story apartment with a basement at 5400 S. Dearborn St. in the Washington Park neighborhood—this project is part of its expanding tennis village that will cost $1.5 million and be designed by SEEK Design and Architecture with Center Court Development LLC as general contractor.  Hyde Park Herald
