- ➤ More than 2,000 people visited KOCO Fest at Mandrake Park on August 2, where Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization hosted a back-to-school bash with free haircuts, food, live music, and sports tournaments (over 700 backpacks were given out) that exceeded organizers’ expectations. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ About 100 high school students visited UIC today for a My Brother’s Keeper Alliance event where UIC Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda welcomed them and discussed college opportunities for young men of color, noting UIC (a Minority-Serving Institution) serves many first-generation students. Panel discussions and networking sessions provided practical guidance on academic programs and student services to help prepare the students for future success. Today UIC
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at UIC discovered that the release factor changes the shape of the tRNA to help break the bond and release the finished protein from the ribosome (this prevents proteins from being released too soon and causing dangerous errors). Their X-ray crystallography study shows that this essential process works across all living organisms. Today UIC
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Mac Properties is asking a federal court to dismiss a class-action lawsuit that claims the company denied Hyde Park renters with Housing Choice Vouchers access to new or renovated apartments and instead steered them to older units — a move the firm says is based on a flawed legal theory — while plaintiffs may move into discovery if the motion is denied. - ➤ Kenzie Hughes, a 17-year-old Libertyville student, competed on season 17 of American Ninja Warrior on NBC, moving through the qualifiers before falling on a few obstacles in the national finals. She plans to study physical therapy and has applied for season 18 to continue her ninja career. Daily Herald
