- ➤ Chicago Public Schools students will return on August 18 as free back-to-school events help families on the mid-South Side prepare. The events run from today through August 16 — featuring a city office celebration by Ald. Jeanette Taylor at Washington Park, a festival at Mandrake Park, a block party at Gary Comer Youth Center, Bud Billiken Parade festivities and a rally at the South Side YMCA — and offer food, school supplies and fun activities for all ages. - ➤ The Schaumburg Township Central Library features the Level Up Advocacy display on its second floor, which gives tips for contacting state legislators + invites patrons to share why the library matters. The display will be available through the end of the month to boost civic advocacy and public awareness of the library's vital role. Daily Herald
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ One person died in a four-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-290/Route 53 near Schaumburg Tuesday at about 1:40 p.m. while four lanes were closed and delays of up to one hour are expected (police are investigating the cause). Daily Herald
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An 18-year-old Fox River Grove resident and Johnsburg High School graduate was held in jail on aggravated DUI charges after he allegedly ran a red light early Monday in McHenry, crashing into a vehicle that killed a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy—his serum alcohol level soared to .35, far above the .08 legal limit. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday morning, the Broken Arrow Riding Club held its 36th annual High Noon Ride and Picnic at Washington Park armory where riders gathered after rain delays and founder Murdock reminded everyone to pay fees. After skies cleared, riders including 5-year-old Bea Sampson (with her 90-year-old grandmother Patricia) rode through neighborhood streets to the lake and back. Hyde Park Herald
