ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ An apartment fire late Sunday in Mount Prospect injured one person and left all 12 units uninhabitable on Forest Cove Drive — officials said the fire was contained within 15 minutes, with damage estimated at $150,000 and the incident appearing accidental. Daily Herald
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Infleqtion, a Colorado-based company, is joining the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park on Chicago’s South Side and will build a neutral atom quantum computer to boost quantum technology. The company will expand its Illinois workforce and receive $5.3 million in tax credits as part of Gov. JB Pritzker’s plan to make Illinois a global capital for quantum computing — a move that has drawn mixed reactions from community members. Hyde Park Herald
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Social Justice Initiative will show the film 'Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years, 1984-1992' tomorrow, July 30th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at an event featuring unreleased footage and insights on her work (wheelchair-accessible) and it is part of the free summer series In Tandem (Solidarity, Solidarité, Solidaridad). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UIC’s School of Public Health launched the Chicago Public Health Innovators program—an immersive six-week pathway—that teaches high schoolers about public health through classroom lessons and field trips on the west side of campus. The program is run with the Chicago Department of Public Health, Healthy Chicago Zones and One Summer Chicago and will culminate in a symposium on July 31. Today UIC
- ➤ UIC runs two summer programs that help students recover credits: Summer Edge lets students retake core courses tuition free & may offer a $300 stipend for study sessions, while Accelerate Your Success provides up to $2,300 for enrollment in at least five credits. The programs have boosted retention rates and kept many students on track for graduation. Today UIC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Pritzker signed bills that require gun owners to store firearms in locked containers to keep them safely away from minors and at-risk persons—with violators facing fines, community service, or civil liability as the law takes effect Jan. 1. He also approved a new law mandating law enforcement to trace recovered guns through a federal system—with that rule effective immediately to aid in tracking crime-related firearms. Daily Herald
