COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The DuPage County Fair is back in action in Wheaton with Axe Women Loggers performing and a watermelon eating contest as carnival rides open at noon today. Michael Lynch, a former NBCs The Voice contestant, will perform at 8 p.m. in the beer garden+a drone light show will close out the night.  Daily Herald
  • Arlington Heights Memorial Library officials announced that the 16-year-old Bookmobile will be replaced next year with a $600,000 custom vehicle that features an external monitor and electric awning—built to serve 27 stops and events after the old bus needed frequent repairs and was off the road for 11 days last year. Donations will cover at least $350,000 of its cost and the current vehicle may be sold for up to $50,000.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Career Army veteran Joseph Leuze (73) from Glendale Heights received his long-delayed Purple Heart on Friday from Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi in Schaumburg for injuries he sustained during the Vietnam War. He served 35 years in the Army as a combat medic and military police officer, including tours in Desert Storm and Afghanistan.  Daily Herald
  • U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly began her Senate race to fill the open seat left by retiring Sen. Durbin—she said her work with voters and in government will help her beat rivals with more money. She pointed to her record on gun safety and lawmaking as proof she is ready to serve.  Hyde Park Herald
  • City Council is considering a sweeping Senior Bill of Rights introduced last Wednesday by Ald. Jeanette Taylor from the Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization with support from Mayor Brandon Johnson. The measure guarantees safe, habitable housing for adults 55 and older — including protections against landlord retaliation and a reestablished Department of Aging — and will take effect on January 1, 2026 if passed.  Hyde Park Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chicago’s CARE program that sends mental health clinicians to 911 calls is facing issues as dispatchers more often send police instead of clinical teams—city officials plan to develop an action plan within 45 days to fix these problems.  South Side Weekly
