- ➤ Crowds gathered Wednesday at the Lake County Fair in Grayslake despite the heat and enjoyed Americana with family-friendly activities — including a 4-H animal judging that began at noon. The fair features a demolition derby, motorcycle high air trick show, monster truck throw down and pro bull riding — and it runs through Sunday at 1060 E. Peterson Road. Daily Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A group of Nobel laureates and experts met at the University of Chicago’s David Rubenstein Forum in Hyde Park last week to warn that the threat of nuclear war is growing and to call for renewed arms control measures. Masako Wada spoke via projection from Japan and said that relying on nuclear deterrence will not keep the world safe — experts say more public action is needed to change policy. Hyde Park Herald
- ➤ Buffalo Grove officials broke ground on a $10.1 million fire station at 505 W. Dundee Road Wednesday. The new station — designed to double the current space and modernize fire service — is expected to open in fall with funding from village reserves and bond proceeds, all without raising taxes. - ➤ Rolling Meadows City Council approved plans for Palatine Park District’s new playground near Plum Grove Middle School but called for more sidewalks and crosswalks to improve student safety. City staff will study upgrades at the park (4801 Old Plum Grove Road) and evaluate grant options (to help fund the improvements). Daily Herald

- ➤ Local hospitals in Chicago are bracing for large Medicaid cutbacks that may affect care for vulnerable patients such as 2-year-old Kairo at La Rabida in Jackson Park—hospital leaders are planning budget adjustments and urging state support to keep vital services running. Officials warn that the funding loss could force deep cuts in care for nearly 90% of patients who rely on Medicaid. Hyde Park Herald

- ➤ Wrapped hot dogs were dropped from a helicopter on Tuesday as the Joliet Slammers tried to set a Wiener Drop world record—co-owner Bill Murray helped hand the hot dogs to fans. Daily Herald
