- ➤ A South Side mutual aid group has rebranded as Manos Entrelazadas South Side Alliance—keeping its focus on helping both longtime residents and new arrivals with food, clothing, and housing. The group runs a free store at Coppin Church on S. Michigan Ave that serves about 3,000 people a year and now offers Know Your Rights training after immigration fees increased July 22. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A long-anticipated 2,000-square-foot Starbucks with a drive-through & outdoor patio will open Thursday morning at 801 E. Algonquin Road in Schaumburg. The store replaces a nearly 40-year-old building that housed Escape Lounge & Sports Bar and will run from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Daily Herald
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Hyde Park will host a busy week of events including the DuSummer Music Series with singer Hector Silveira on July 24 and the Amplify New Play Festival with film screenings, live readings, and workshops from July 24 through July 27. Other plans include the Ebony-opoly tour on July 26, a free screening of Selma with a voting rights talk on July 27, and outdoor film and sound sessions on July 29 and 30 — all held at local venues with free or low-cost admission. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A rejected plan to convert a 21,760-square-foot office building at 1040 W. Northwest Highway into a day care center for 339 children may be revived in Mount Prospect. The village board voted on July 15 to reconsider the proposal — which had raised concerns about noise, traffic, and property values — and the planning commission will rehear the matter on Aug. 28. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ M/I Homes plans a 189-unit residential development on 35 acres at Aptakisic and Prairie roads in Buffalo Grove. Buffalo Grove trustees sent the proposal to the planning commission for review and raised concerns about traffic and local school impacts. Daily Herald
- ➤ Affordable housing developer Preservation of Affordable Housing has been renovating Island Terrace Apartments, a tower that has 21 floors in Woodlawn since January after hidden structural issues pushed the project finish to spring 2027 and forced many residents to live in temporary homes—officials promised more meetings and better updates to help tenants understand their rights under federal law.
