CRIME NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Timuel Black—activist, educator and chronicler of Chicago’s Black history—was posthumously inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame at Woodson Regional Library on July 12. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Council members rejected a motion to override Mayor Brandon Johnson’s veto of a snap curfew measure—voting 28—22 at the July 16 meeting—while deferring proposals on housing and police oversight. In the same session, longtime Vice Mayor Walter Burnett Jr. retired after thirty years of service and may seek a new role at the Chicago Housing Authority or run for Congress.  South Side Weekly
  • On July 3, members of Chicago’s Jewish Voice for Peace ended an eighteen-day hunger strike that started on June 16 to urge lawmakers to stop authorizing arms shipments to Israel — the protest aimed to highlight the blockade in Gaza that has left civilians without essential aid. They met with congressional staff and lawmakers, and an arrest was made when protesters visited Duckworth’s office.  South Side Weekly
  • City officials and designers presented an updated draft design at a June meeting for Morgan Shoal – a Kenwood lakefront area facing rapid erosion and storm damage. Residents said the public review process feels rushed – they worry that community feedback has not been fully addressed.  Hyde Park Herald
