COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Carrie Blomquist found a waterlogged wallet in the shallow water of Pistakee Lake’s Columbia Bay during Father’s Day weekend that held a 1991 driver’s license for the late John Mack Jr., and she promptly returned it to his sons. The Mack brothers plan to share the framed license as a cherished reminder of their family's early days on the Chain O’ Lakes.  Daily Herald
  • Visitors will tour the historic one-room Schaumburg Centre School, dating to the 1860s and located on the north side of St. Peter Lutheran Church grounds, from noon to 3 p.m. on July 13—owned by the village of Schaumburg and cared for by the Schaumburg Township Historical Society, the tour will showcase displays on early farm life.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in Hyde Park saw hateful graffiti with words like 'Kill all Jews' on mailboxes, stop signs, and other public property last month—police have increased patrols and local leaders joined forces to support the Jewish community as the investigation continues.  Hyde Park Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hyde Park music teachers trace a 143-year teaching tradition and now blend classical methods with modern techniques to help students learn music—teachers like Nova Zaii and Marija Bubanj show that today’s lessons mix skill with emotional support to overcome challenges.   • Mayor Ludovic Hocbon from Palatine’s sister city Fontenay-Le-Comte will visit Palatine next month for the 25th annual Street Fest and attend the farmers market on August 23—bringing French cultural exchange to local residents. EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of DuPage workers are moving closer to forming a union with AFSCME Council 31. Nearly 600 classified staff signed union cards and the group now awaits certification from the Illinois Labor Relations Board to represent jobs in administration, clerical, and IT at the Glen Ellyn campus.  Daily Herald
  • UIC College of Architecture students Gabija Gricius, Racheal Olujide, and Toluwalogo Oluyede were named as the 2025 Kokkino Educational Fund Scholarship recipients—an award established by Evangel Kokkino and his daughter Sofia Kokkino Patton in memory of his mother to support women and immigrant students with financial need; the honor bolsters their journey as they pursue a bachelor's degree in architecture.  Today UIC

  • Hoffman Estates officials are inviting residents to help update the village’s land-use and strategic plans during a free event Tuesday, July 22 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at South Ridge Park—residents can also provide feedback by taking a multilingual survey or leaving a voicemail.  Daily Herald

  • A survey sent to Bears season ticket holders this week asked for input on seating options, ticket prices and VIP tailgating costs for a planned state-of-the-art stadium in Arlington Heights. Village officials and Bears consultants are reviewing studies on traffic, parking and economic impact to guide future plans for the project—the final details will be released after more review.  Daily Herald
