Good morning, Chicago. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Many young Latino adults in Pilsen choose to live at home to cope with rising housing costs and gentrification—23-year-old art graduate Bibiana Saucedo said she stays with her family to have space for her work and save money. Local research shows that rising taxes and rents are pushing families to share households and contribute financially to keep their community intact.  South Side Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Young Chicago artists on the South and West sides rely on subsidized housing—along with part-time service jobs—to support their art careers because fair wages remain out of reach. Local arts groups and affordable housing projects work to ease rising costs and delays in funding that affect creative work.  South Side Weekly
  • Hyde Park Art Center’s new Open Arts model—featuring a contribute-what-you-can pricing system—boosted enrollment by 50% as fixed tuition was replaced and classes filled quickly with a diverse mix of local students. Administrators also introduced tech support clinics and a ten-minute registration hold feature to help manage the rapid demand for affordable art education.  South Side Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City inspectors have detected strong, noxious asphalt odors at the MAT Asphalt facility in McKinley Park despite blue smoke controls installed last April — over two dozen air pollution complaints have been filed and the facility has received environmental citations. Residents report headaches and nausea when the odor is noticeable and remain worried about its impact on local development.  South Side Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Project leaders said the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial will break ground in Washington Park by the end of this year as they work to close a $1.3 million funding gap (organizers hope to finish fundraising by the end of August). The design by JAQ Corp and Greenprint Partners will honor over 100 survivors of police torture (including those affected by former Commander Jon Burge).  Hyde Park Herald
