Good morning, Chicago. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 20th of June.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Rink, Illinois’ only Black-owned roller rink in Chatham, celebrated 50 years as a community hub for family skate nights and local outreach programs—like nutrition classes and mural contests—and it continues to preserve Chicago’s longstanding skating culture under co-owners Ramona and Curtis Pouncy. They have invested in renovations after a pandemic closure and remain determined to keep the historic venue open for future generations. South Side Weekly
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Miche Fest was canceled after Mexican artists could not secure visas, and many local vendors lost expected income — organizers link the decision to federal immigration policies that hurt community events. The festival had brought music, food, and support to Chicago and its cancellation leaves a clear gap in local cultural life. South Side Weekly
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 4, ICE agents detained community organizer and mother Gladis Yolanda Chávez Pineda along with nine others during a routine check-in at the ISAP office in the South Loop—witnesses say agents barred legal support and protesters later called for their release while a petition gathered over 10,000 signatures; ICE later confirmed that Chávez Pineda remains in Grayson County Jail in Kentucky. - ➤ Mayor Brandon Johnson said he would veto a snap curfew ordinance passed by City Council on Wednesday because it would harm trust between police and residents. The measure would let the police chief order minors to leave an area within 30 minutes and passed with a vote of 27 to 22, falling short of the required 34 votes for an override. South Side Weekly
