COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chicago's 50 outdoor public swimming pools will open for the summer on Saturday—offering access seven days a week for the first time since the pandemic. The Washington Park pool at 5531 S. Russel Dr. will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on weekends—and all pools will stay open until after August 17.  Hyde Park Herald
  • Experimental Station will host a memorial for Ken Dunn on Saturday, June 21 — the ceremony begins at 3 p.m. at 6100 S. Blackstone Ave. to honor his work in recycling and green living.  Hyde Park Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man was walking near Six Flags Great America in Gurnee Monday night and was struck by a vehicle just after 10 p.m.—police said he was pronounced dead on scene, and the investigation remains ongoing.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal agents arrested a man in Elgin on Monday around 7:30 a.m. after pulling him from a pickup on a residential street; his family said he is (undocumented) and has lived and worked in Elgin for 12 years (with no criminal record) while his pregnant partner said he was not the target and he is set to appear in Broadview on July 11.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC’s Graduate College and University Library hosted its annual Image of Research competition, inviting graduate and professional students to submit images and videos that connect to their research. The winning entries include work on Arctic climate change and Chicago river pollution and are now showcased online (detailed descriptions are available).  Today UIC
  • More than 1,500 UIC students have saved over $3.5M thanks to free Kaplan test prep courses offered through the Prepare for Illinois’ Future program, a state-funded initiative available until December. The program—supported by a $10M bipartisan effort in this year’s budget—faces uncertainty after it was not included in the 2026 budget.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arlington Heights has temporarily blocked outside law enforcement agencies from using its license-plate reader data amid concerns over unauthorized searches linked to a missing woman and immigration queries. Village manager Randy Recklaus said the measure will remain until Flock Safety improves data protection — officials found no arrests resulted from the previous data access.  Daily Herald
  • East Dundee trustees looked at three new plans for the old Haeger Potteries site after concerns were raised about an earlier proposal—Brinshore Development offered options with 119, 104, and 89 mixed-income rental units using some existing buildings, and a community meeting in July will let residents give feedback.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local doctors in Chicago will continue advising patients based on science despite recent federal changes that dropped some Covid-19 vaccine recommendations. They warned that altering the guidelines could confuse coverage and leave gaps as new variants circulate during the summer peak — with further details expected once the ACIP panel meets.  Hyde Park Herald
  • Researchers at UIC successfully treated colorectal cancer tumors in animal experiments using a cholesterol inhibitor that blocked extra cholesterol in cancer cells with APC mutations — this new treatment did not harm normal cells. The team will develop an oral version of the inhibitor and is filing a patent to bring it to clinical use.  Today UIC
