CRIME NEWS

  • Schaumburg police responded to a 911 call around 5:50 p.m. Sunday on the 800 block of South Braintree Drive after one shot was fired—no injuries were reported, a recovered gun caused property damage, and two people were taken into custody as investigators work the case.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC students won first place in the Robotic Construction competition at NASA's Lunabotics Challenge in Florida earlier this month with a design that used an industrial vibrator similar to those on Chicago snowplow trucks (a feature that captured judges’ attention). The team earned the Innovation Award for the second year in a row and will work to improve their design for next year's contest.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transit agency officials in Chicagoland met last week to plan for a doomsday funding scenario—if new funds are not secured by the end of the year, agencies like the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace will cut services by about 20%, raise fares in 2026 and face layoffs amid a $771 million annual budget gap.  Hyde Park Herald
  • Gov. JB Pritzker defended Illinois’ immigration laws at a congressional hearing last Thursday, saying the state will deport violent criminals with due process and work with local law enforcement. He blamed decades of federal inaction for a surge in migrants + said he opposes sending the National Guard into cities without local agreement + noted that a new state budget will cut some immigrant health benefits.  Hyde Park Herald
  • A McHenry County judge approved Fox River Grove’s plan to demolish a long-abandoned 100-unit apartment complex at 401 Algonquin Road that has been stalled since 2022 amid lawsuits by contractors and a developer. The village will soon ask qualified contractors for proposals for demolition—further legal actions include seeking compensation and an eminent domain hearing set for June 25.  Daily Herald
