COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Free Root Operation, a violence prevention group in Bronzeville, now has a new space (funded by a Cook County Health initiative) to support 2,000 Black women caregivers with therapy, wellness activities and leadership training aimed at breaking generational cycles of violence. The program helps women care for their families by providing access to wellness retreats, counseling and education.  South Side Weekly

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Schaumburg man, identified as 24-year-old Rane Apyter, died after his motorcycle collided with a sedan near Arlington Heights Road and Plum Grove Circle in Buffalo Grove at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening — he was taken to Endeavor Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where he was pronounced dead.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chicago’s Sueños festival returned to Grant Park over Memorial Day weekend and featured three stages hosting Latinx icons including Peso Pluma—who made up for last year’s weather-canceled show—with memorable performances by Shakira, Don Omar, and local talent like Kareniod to celebrate rich Latin culture.  South Side Weekly
  • Grant Park hosted the 4th Sueños festival the weekend of Día de los Caídos and drew thousands of Chicago residents to enjoy Latin music by artists like Peso Pluma, Shakira, and Don Omar. The two-day event featured three stages—Sueños, La Fuente, and La Plaza—to highlight both big names and emerging local talent.  South Side Weekly
  • Naper Settlement in Naperville now features the new Thresher Experience exhibit that uses digital interactive technology and AI to bring a 1912 Wood Brothers Threshing Machine to life—showing visitors how historic grain separation worked. The exhibit is housed in the museum’s new Herman and Anna Hageman Memorial Thresher Hall and is available with general admission.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dozens of organizations and nearly 100 individuals signed a letter urging Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke to stop a pilot program that lets police file felony gun possession charges without a prosecutor’s review — critics say the program removes due process and puts Black communities like Englewood, Roseland, and Pullman at risk.  Hyde Park Herald

  • Aleks Alston, a basketball star from Kenwood Academy, will join the University of Maryland this fall on a full-ride scholarship after a record-breaking season when his team won its first city championship—he was chosen over offers from several big schools and overcame a broken tibia to finish strong.  Hyde Park Herald
