CULTURE NEWS

  • UIC students, faculty, staff and alums are invited to celebrate Juneteenth at the SRI2025 event on June 19 with free admission if registered by June 9. The day will feature a performance by Soul Children of Chicago, a panel moderated by UIC Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda, a book discussion with U of I System President Tim Killeen, and a keynote talk by Katharine Hayhoe.  Today UIC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DOJ opened an investigation in May into Chicago's hiring practices under Title VII after Mayor Brandon Johnson defended his diverse administration at a church in Woodlawn—he said 'our people hire our people.' A letter from DOJ’s civil rights division on May 19 cited his remarks while his 105-person team is under review.  South Side Weekly
  • The new Schaumburg Township highway commissioner Timothy Buelow questioned a $27,500 contract approved by his predecessor Scott Kegarise on April 25 for an interactive website from USynergetics & said the decision appears politically motivated and not in taxpayers’ best interests as he awaits legal advice.  Daily Herald
  • The Mount Prospect village board honored Pride Month with a proclamation this week while some residents asked for a Pride flag at village hall. Mayor Paul Hoefert said the village only flies the American, Illinois and Mount Prospect flags and noted a different symbol might be considered next year.  Daily Herald
  • About 600 employees from the Lake County Health Department filed a petition on June 5 with the Illinois Labor Relations Board to unionize with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31—seeking better wages, work conditions and benefits—and the union said certification will proceed once a majority of workers sign the petition.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed West Nile virus was found in mosquito pools collected on May 27 from Roselle, Medinah, Clarendon Hills — Burr Ridge in DuPage County. The department advised residents to protect themselves with repellent and by removing stagnant water while no human cases have been reported so far.  Daily Herald
