CRIME NEWS

  • At its end-of-year meeting, Kyle Bowman of the University of Chicago Police Department said violent crime in Hyde Park dropped 29% and robberies declined 55% with no carjackings reported due to increased patrols and new bicycle officer training—he will contact city police to coordinate further safety improvements.  Hyde Park Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hyde Park has not had a full-time librarian in its public schools since 2023 because CPS cut these positions. Under the new CPS budget, schools will soon be able to hire 30 librarians a year and train teachers as library specialists so students gain better access to books.  Hyde Park Herald
  • Southside STEM Station opened a free STEM learning lab for South Side youth on May 29 at 1520 E. Harper Ct. in the nearly complete Hyde Park Labs development, funded by the project’s developers, tenants, and the University of Chicago. The lab offers in-school and after-school programs including robotics, coding, and design projects—providing hands-on opportunities for students to build scientific skills.  Hyde Park Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Streamwood village board will vote Thursday at 7 p.m. on an ordinance that could ban pocket bikes, ATVs and off-highway motorcycles from streets, sidewalks and private property without owner permission—this move comes after residents raised safety concerns.  Daily Herald
