GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers passed House Bill 5090, allowing rideshare drivers to unionize after weeks of lobbying at the Capitol (lowering signature thresholds and requiring a 4-cent-per-ride fee to fund driver support), and the measure now awaits the governor’s approval. Hyde Park Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UIC researcher Benjamin Terrones-Sanchez has developed a cuffless wireless smartwatch that monitors blood pressure continuously (tested on 77 healthy and 88 hypertensive adults). A clinical trial will test the device in a real-world setting. Today UIC
- ➤ UIC assistant professor Marta Markiewicz-Potoczny found a new cell pathway that helps keep DNA healthy and may slow aging and lower cancer risk. The study shows that the NMD pathway is key in protecting telomeres (cell ends) and opens paths for future health treatments. Today UIC
