COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Homecourt Collective started as a temporary coffee shop at Miyagi Records on East Garfield Boulevard in January after hosting events at Navy Pier and other venues. Founders Melissa Del Carmen and Alex Myung now run a long-term residency and plan to expand their community coffee project—hoping to grow into a physical store in the future.  Hyde Park Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is closing its Batavia-side public entrance on Monday for the construction of a Welcome and Access Center that is expected to reopen by June 22. Visitors in Warrenville can use the Batavia Road entrance—open daily from sunrise to sunset.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Illinois Chicago researchers found that weak muscle blood vessels may cause muscle loss and fatigue in cancer patients (cachexia). The study used animal models and patient samples to show that turning on the protein PGC1α can repair blood vessels and improve muscle strength, which may lead to new treatments.  Today UIC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • West Dundee officials began tearing down the outer walls of the shuttered Spring Hill Mall on Thursday and plan to finish demolition by November— the move clears the way to redevelop the site into a mixed-use project with homes, retail, and a new police station while Carpentersville reviews options for the Kohl's store.  Daily Herald
