COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Streamwood held its annual Memorial Day ceremony Sunday morning at the village’s Veterans Memorial—where Village President Billie Roth, U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and local veterans paid tribute with speeches, music by the Spring Valley Concert Band and a table ceremony honoring fallen, missing and imprisoned service members. Retired Navy Capt. Kathryn Serbin addressed the crowd while a 19-year-old local performed the national anthem to remind residents that peace is earned through sacrifice.  Daily Herald
  • York teacher Justin Riskus and Elmhurst veteran Bill Shanklin are raising funds to build a new black granite memorial honoring 114 Elmhurst graduates who died in military service since World War II—more than half of the $30,000 goal is pledged and the memorial is planned for dedication next Memorial Day.  Daily Herald
