COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hanover Park gardener Kelly Bauer opened The Little Blue Greenhouse on the 8100 block of Northway Drive last spring to let local community members drop off and pick up seeds, seedlings and cuttings. The free exchange — now a popular hub among neighbors — fosters sharing and strengthens local bonds.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 22, 2025, 19 artists unveiled new works on the 53rd and 55th Street viaducts as part of a public art project updating installations from 2008; Woodlawn resident Fantasía Ariel Graham’s eight- by 16-foot panel, Colorful Stories, shows portraits of guaranteed income pilot participants—its bright colors add new life to the community—and local groups led the effort.  Hyde Park Herald
  • The refurbished Danada House in Wheaton, once owned by Dan and Ada Rice, reopened this weekend after a $6.5 million upgrade that replaced most windows + added an elevator for improved accessibility. The venue now displays racehorse trophies and hosts weddings while preserving its historic charm.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Tuesday evening meeting in Woodlawn, residents and Ald. Jeanette Taylor discussed repurposing two shuttered schools—Fiske Elementary and Wadsworth Elementary—that are now up for sale by CPS. Bids for the buildings, listed at $750,000 and $3 million, are due by May 30 and community members shared ideas to convert them into community centers, housing, or business incubators.  Hyde Park Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Johnson discussed his first two years in office in an interview with the Weekly. He said his administration cut violent crime by 22% & invested $1.25 billion in housing and economic development while facing challenges with high asylum shelter costs and staff changes.  South Side Weekly
  • On Latino Unity Day, Latinx residents from Chicago and nearby suburbs gathered in Springfield to protest Kristi Noem’s planned visit and block her press conference outside Governor Pritzker’s home. The protest led officials to change the event schedule — lawmakers later demanded accountability for her actions.  South Side Weekly
  • Lawmakers approved bills on Wednesday to limit community colleges from using artificial intelligence as the only source of teaching, require all new school buses to have seat belts after 2031, and mandate food handlers receive training on food allergens + the measures now move to the House before heading to the governor. The new rules aim to protect students and ensure safer practices across education, transportation, and food services.  Daily Herald
  • Illinois lawmakers are proposing Senate Bill 1181 to extend lawsuit protections to the press after a state Supreme Court ruling allowed a defamation suit against the Chicago Sun-Times to proceed—aiming to include regular news reports under existing anti-SLAPP laws. The bill cleared the Senate and passed the House before returning to the Senate—awaiting final legislative approval.  Daily Herald

  • Maturitease Incontinent Skin Care Boutique, a new salon for end-of-life caregivers, will open next month at the Del Prado building where owner Coprice Jones, with 30 years of caregiving experience, will offer specialized skincare products and supplies for dignified care. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12 p.m. on June 13 at 5305 S. Hyde Park Blvd + the boutique is designed as a supportive space for caregivers.  Hyde Park Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kenwood Academy baseball clinched its second city championship with a 10-9 win over Lane Tech on May 22 at Les Miller Field—senior plays drove a dramatic comeback in a nail-biting finish. The team will face Fenwick Academy in the state playoffs on May 29 at Brother Rice High School with the game set for 4:30 p.m.  Hyde Park Herald
