- ➤ Veterans in Hyde Park gather every first Tuesday at Valois Restaurant for coffee, eggs and shared memories—a program started by Vietnam veteran Mark Johnson that resumed in late 2024 after pandemic delays. Retired librarian Barbara Jean Walsh will host two Memorial Day events on Monday, May 26, with a Quiet Vigil for Loss and Remembrance at Promontory Point at 8 a.m. and a Poppy Ceremony at the Iowa Building at 9:30 a.m. to honor fallen service members. - ➤ The Chicago-based Citizens Utility Board said ComEd bills will go up by about $10 a month starting on June 1, making summer rates 45% higher than last year. The group blamed poor grid policies by PJM for the increase — and warned that scammers may target customers as energy costs rise. Daily Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge has blocked Glen Ellyn’s rule banning short-term rentals after the owners of a five-bedroom home filed suit claiming the ordinance harms their right to earn money for family needs. The village must file a response by May 22 — the homeowners seek further relief by arguing the ban violates their constitutional rights. Daily Herald
- ➤ Residents in three Lake County neighborhoods near Buffalo Grove will soon receive Lake Michigan water after a $2.7 million project was completed. Officials said paperwork must be finalized before over 3,700 customers access water under a 20-year agreement with Buffalo Grove—with no extra fees charged. Daily Herald
