Good morning, Chicago. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of May.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chicago used to have many safe places for teens to hang out and celebrate music, but many malls, skating rinks, and dance clubs have closed due to tougher rules, gentrification, and safety concerns—leaving fewer spots where young people can gather. Local residents recall a time when these third spaces played a key role in community life.  South Side Weekly
  • Fiber Friends Studios opened a permanent shop at 1744 E. 55th St in late April after hosting pop-up meet-ups for local knitters and crocheters. Founder Tina Miklas said the shop will offer regular classes on Thursdays and Fridays—and will host a Pride Month event on May 28.  Hyde Park Herald
  • Large museums in Illinois hold many Native American remains, and officials have begun a long process of repatriating these ancestors under updated NAGPRA guidelines—this effort involves extensive paperwork and careful coordination with tribal nations. State agencies and tribal representatives are working together to correct past wrongs and honor cultural heritage.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chicago City Council is considering an ordinance that lets police impose snap curfews with a 30-minute warning in areas experiencing large gatherings—aiming to prevent disorder. Under the proposal, under-18s who violate the curfew will be detained until a guardian arrives, and parents could face a $500 fine.  South Side Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • York senior pitcher Jack Bodach overcame a painful blister in Monday’s game against Downers Grove North—he pitched seven innings with two hits and five strikeouts to lead his team to a 3-1 win in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play. Coach River Pitlock praised Bodach for his smooth transition from reliever to starter and his determination in working through the injury.  Daily Herald
