EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UIC names the 2026 Silver Circle Award winners for teaching excellence today. Selected by graduating seniors, the winners receive a $500 prize, an engraved memento and a spot on the award plaque at their college commencements. Today UIC
- ➤ Emily Manzo, a UIC urban education senior and Native American Support Program leader, revived the campus powwow and will graduate on May 7 before starting a PhD in math and science education this fall. She aims to integrate Indigenous knowledge into curricula on her reservation (supporting local Native students). Today UIC
- ➤ Hundreds of local residents attended Chicago's first Beaver Festival at Nichols Park last Saturday—where families and children learned about wildlife conservation through animal coloring, hands-on exhibits, and up-close encounters with beaver pelts. - ➤ A UIC study finds that kids in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program show higher self-esteem and lower rates of violence and substance use after four years — highlighting the long-term benefits of mentorship. Today UIC
- ➤ UIC’s Evans Scholars program, now the third-largest nationwide with 77 students, will graduate its largest class of 16 in May at the commencement stage; the program supports high-achieving golf caddies by covering tuition and housing for four years. Today UIC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced a $125 million settlement that may yield Peoples Gas bill credits over the next three years if approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission. Credits average $50 this year and $40 in 2027 and 2028—improving accountability in the pipe retirement program. Hyde Park Herald
