COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rev. Jesse Jackson (84), a longtime civil rights leader and a key Chicago figure, died on February 17 at his home with his family nearby. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition will announce public observances in Chicago soon.  South Side Weekly

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyde Park Produce closed on Feb. 26 after the Illinois Department of Revenue revoked its business registration for unpaid taxes, and longtime customers now worry the neighborhood staple may force them to shop at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s + fear it may not reopen.  Hyde Park Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Side Weekly and Build Coffee and Books hosted the first Third Thursdays open mic and writing workshop on Feb. 26, offering a space for sharing grief and creative expression. The next event is scheduled for Mar. 19 (6:30-8:30pm) at Build Coffee and Books.  South Side Weekly
  • Definition Theatre is presenting Black Cypress Bayou, a play exploring family secrets and generational trauma, through March 15. It shows Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. (with an extra show on Saturday, March 7) at 1160 E. 55th St.  South Side Weekly
  • A new biography released last month by University of Illinois Press helps readers rediscover Sol Butler, a celebrated Olympian and local mentor who overcame early adversity and left a lasting mark on Chicago’s South Side (his tragic death at Pappy’s remains part of his complex legacy).  South Side Weekly
