  • Hyde Park’s local LDS ward celebrated its 50th anniversary this past weekend at 5200 S. University Ave, where 200 people enjoyed dessert and dance, shared memories, and donated canned food to help local pantries. The congregation continues hosting outreach events to welcome new arrivals.  Hyde Park Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIC welcomes the spring semester with record enrollment and research funding and will host Spark Talks (1:30 to 4:45 p.m. Jan. 15) in Student Center West, Thompson Room to share bold new ideas.  Today UIC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the Lions of Illinois Eye Research Institute (at UI Health) found that some diabetic retinopathy samples lack endothelial cells and instead show immune cells; they will continue research to determine if this switch helps clear abnormal vessels and guide better treatments for vision loss.  Today UIC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kenwood Academy girls basketball defeated Mother McAuley 72-69 on Saturday, boosting the Broncos to a 16-4 record; the team will meet Dyett on Wednesday (at 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.) at 5 p.m. for their next conference game.  Hyde Park Herald
